In conjunction with Manchester Literature Festival, Speakeasy returns to present, Black Jesus, their third new work of 2008. Directed by Chanje Kunda, Yvonne McCalla and Colin Thorpe, Black Jesus is set in future Manchester in a parallel universe called Onechester where a new age is promised and new forms of language flourish.

The show will feature a select line-up of Speakeasy poets and live music from the world-class Speakeasy band.

Special guest poet: the dynamic Roger Robinson. Roger Robinson is the author of a short fiction collection, Adventures in 3D (lubin & kleyner) and a collection of poetry, Suitcase (waterways).

Two of the finest exponents of comic poetry join forces to bring you a marvellous evening of mirth and merriment.

Marvin Cheeseman made his debut as a performance poet at Manchester’s frog and Bucket comedy club in 1998 - we look forward to welcoming the Doyen of Deadpan to wordfest!

Julian Daniel is a stand-up comic with a burgeoning reputation on the Northern circuit, and his recent tongue-in-cheek book How to Dump your Girlfriend co-written with Henry Pumpkin has been published to much acclaim

Akiel Chinelo and Kate Gilbert will be showcasing “Piano Keys” at the Royal Exchange as part of SFX on Friday 18th April 6pm - 7pm. The audience will be transported back to wartime Britain, with a story about courtship, jive dancing and music of the time, told through spoken word and interspersed with song. There will be an opportunity for jive dancing so bring your dancing feet!
